Celebrating Caregivers in November

celebrating caregivers, national family caregivers month

November is not only Home Care and Hospice Care month but also National Family Caregivers month. In 2021, 1 in 6 Americans were caregivers of someone 50 years or older. Home Care Providers’ wants to acknowledge the love and care these family caregivers provide day in and day out.

Caregiving is hard

Taking on the responsibility of caring for a loved one is no small task. It is a commitment that requires many hours, days, and even sleepless nights. Each day you continue to give them the support they need because of the love you have for them. But we understand that it’s not easy and you aren’t only caregivers. You also may have jobs, children to look after, and everything else that makes balancing very difficult and even overwhelming.

Taking care of yourself may be at the bottom of your list but we want to help you move that to the top of the list.

Finding a Good Support System

Caregiving may be something you have taken on but that does not mean that you should do it all on your own. Having family and friends to lean on and talk to when things get difficult is not only important but essential for your mental health. If there is family available to give you breaks for caregiving from time to time, make sure to take advantage of that time and use it for yourself.

Show Yourself Some Grace

Some days will always be harder than others and on those days it is important to give yourself the grace you deserve. There is no way that you will always be able to give 110% every single day. We all have off days, and that is okay. You have taken on a huge role, give yourself compassion when the difficult days do come.

There are, however, things you can do for you to make your days a little lighter.

Remember to take time for you

Starting off the day for you is not only important but absolutely necessary. It is easy to put yourself at the bottom of your to-do list. That is why we have partnered with Dementia by Day to give you the Caregiver Journal. This journal helps you to start the day with intention and gratitude and helps you prepare for the day ahead of you. Doing something for you isn’t selfish but something that should be deemed a necessity.

It is also important to know when it is time to explore other options for care when necessary. A qualified home health professional can assist in providing respite care to family caregivers and even alleviate stress. Home Care Providers have a number of experienced caregivers from therapists, personal care aides, registered nurses, and home health aides who are available to help.
