As a caregiver, what kind of ways do you use to connect within?

Caregiving can be a physically and mentally exhausting task. One way we as caregivers can find an easy outlet is through writing in a journal.

You do not have to be a writer to journal your inner thoughts or feelings!

Journaling is a self-care practice caregivers can use to look inside themselves and provide an outlet instead of only using it to record information about their loved one they are caring for. One short entry can mean a lot!

What can you journal?

  • Experiences
  • Personal Feelings
  • Insight

It is one’s own choice whether to share your writings. Most caregivers use their journal as a space to share difficulties, vent, and feel uncensored.

What are the benefits of journaling?

  • Freedom to self-express at any time: As a caregiver, your time is precious. Having the freedom to choose when and where to write can be mentally freeing since there are no rules. Write while the person you care for is resting or sleeping or while waiting for an appointment.
  • Creating self-awareness: Taking the time to focus within can unleash inner feelings, hope, and calm through a form of release. By taking the time to acknowledge overwhelmed or hurt feelings, fear, sadness or anger a person can actually decrease anxiety or depression.
  • Enables ability to find words for feelings: Writing is therapeutic since you can take the time to address your wants and needs as a caregiver. As an individual who is constantly looking outside of oneself, taking note to your needs will actually make you a stronger caregiver. Why? Just as you have to fill a car with gas to get from place to place, refilling your inner tank can carry you through the motions of your day healthier and happier.

How do I get started?

Home Care Providers has partnered with Rachael Wonderlin, Dementia By Day owner and consultant, to bring a new resource to caregivers – a Caregiver Journal.

Most caregiver journals are for tracking your observations and care tactics for the one you are caring for. This journal is for you – the caregiver.

We challenge you to put yourself first, 1x a day, to think and reflect. It can take as little or as long as you like. This journal provides one year’s worth of prompts and even daily reminders and tips about dementia and caregiving. It is not homework. It is not graded
